However, determined to stay clean, Jason sings
"I Don't Want It."

at the "gift" and resist the Devil/Lou's temptation when
he sings "This Time."

Jason complains about singing in church and only receiving an "Aaaaamen." Mom responds with:
"You ain’t soundin’ like you got the heart and soul
of a gospel singer." She sings "Do You Know The
Lord?"
-
Jason attempts to tell Mom about his painful childhood memories but she refuses to listen and talks about the
past that also pains her. Frustrated Jason rushes out the house and dances into a stream of consciousness. "Flashback"
-
When Jason complains about his life, Mom educates him on their family's painful, yet historical legacy of activism against racism, oppression, and voter intimidation in America. She inspires him to honor
the sacrifices made "for you and me to have a better life" when she sings "It's Up To Us."
NOTE: In addition to a heart wrenching love story, this musical drama has many
interwoven layers of the
Wilson family's trials
and tribulations. The above synopsis
barely scratches the surface!
